FLORA JANE MOORMAN

CONGRATULATIONS to FLORA JANE MOORMAN, Ms. North Carolina Senior America 2014, and a special thank you to the wonderful State Directors Judy Kelley, Bev Wetherbie & Sarah Daffron for another successful year!

Flora grew up in a very small southern cotton mill town in a family of six children. Acting as a second mom six days a week, the education in my young years was light on the books and heavy in life. During those years the church was a major part of my life. She was married at 18 never having more than 75 miles away from home, family did not own a car, did not have a driver's license, and had never seen the ocean. Little did Flora know what God's plan was for her to be.

Things were about to change, her husband failed his German class and was not going to graduate in four years from college and this changed his draft status. He joined the Army in the field of electronics and was sent to San Antonio, TX. With a packed car they arrived at the base to get his orders and were told "We are at War and he is going to Germany and you cannot go at this time." There Flora was with a car full of stuff and no place to go. Two months later Flora arrived in Germany, and lived off base with a German family. She learned to speak better German than her husband and became a part of a German family. This experience changed me dramatically. This is where Flora acquired a lot of her empathy, consideration for risks and detailed planning skills. It was her responsibility to plan and schedule trips, to know where everything was open and more importantly if it was free. They visited 17 countries, ate sea rations and campled out everywhere they visited. As a result of this Flora has never lost her respect or joy of learning about other countries and the people.

Flora is a Gemini and lives life through her heart. She loves life with a passion and her HOPE and FAITH inspires her daily.
