Dorcas
Preston was born May 16, 1938 in Huntington, West Virginia.
Her late father, Rev. Marvin Mortenson, was a Church of God Minister and Baptist
Minister. Her mother, Lucille Mortenson, was a piano and voice teacher,
along with being a homemaker who raised four successful children.
Being
a dynamic leader and orator, the Rev. Mortenson's specialty
was launching new churches and building their congregations. Rev. Mortenson took
his ministry and his family zigzagging across the country for much of Mrs.
Preston's early years, spending time in West Virginia, Indiana, Texas, Michigan,
Alabama, Washington, Missouri, and Ohio. The experience provided Ms. Preston
with a vast knowledge of our nation's diversity. Living in both small towns and
big cities across the country, she learned that a sense of community is the key
ingredient that holds us as a people and as a nation, together.
She began her professional career
as a performer at the age of three, when she sang, "God Bless America" for the
Tennessee State Church of God Convention in Cleveland, Tennessee. Her first
musical training was under the guidance of her talented mother. She graduated
from West High School in Columbus, Ohio in 1956.
Ms.
Preston moved to California in 1961 where she raised her
three sons, one of whom now lives in Nevada. Her other two sons and one grandson
live in California.
In the 1960's Ms.
Preston attended Los Angeles Valley Jr. College in Van Nuys, California, where
she studied music and real estate. It was there that she garnered leading roles
in operas such as "Orpheus and Euridice" and "Dido and Aeneas." She went on to
study voice privately with such renowned voice teachers as the late Maurice
Allard.
Ms.
Preston's vocal talent and stunning beauty opened doors to
performances on radio and television. She continues to sing everything from
opera to pop and travels the World singing, modeling and performing in a vast
array of professional and charitable venues. She is a licensed Real Estate
Broker but spends much of her time singing and volunteering for several of her
favorite causes including: The Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center,
Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Opera Pacific, the Christian Woman's Clubs of
Stonecroft Ministries and the Love Lift Ministries of Newport Beach, California.
As
Ms. Senior America 2001, Ms. Preston has assumed her role as
a new leader for all senior women in America and is the spokeswoman who
represents the Ms. Senior America organization's "2001: Age of Elegance."
