MS DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SENIOR AMERICA 2013, NANCY BERRY
CONGRATULATIONS to NANCY BERRY, Ms District of Columbia Senior America 2013!
Nancy A. Berry is a native Washingtonian. She received her grade school education from DC Public Schools, graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School. She attended Howard University and graduated from Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, MD with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Library Science. She has her Master’s in education which she received from the University of Hartford, in Hartford, Connecticut.
Nancy taught elementary school in Connecticut as well as being a Film Librarian for Hartford Public Library. Upon her return to the District of Columbia, she worked for 29 years for the District Of Columbia Public Schools serving as a Library/Media Specialist, Assistant Principal and retiring as Principal from Shaed Elementary School in 2003. Although Nancy was not yet ready to leave the educational field, she worked for Archbishop Carroll High School as a Library/Media Specialist. This was an additional rewarding experience which allowed her to teach 10th grade English; be a senior class sponsor; coach girls’ volleyball as well as work with the school’s Opportunity Scholars. She retired from Carroll in June, 2011, after seven years of service.
Yet, another corner was turned which included teaching seniors and autistic adults line dancing. She also teaches an enthusiastic group of seniors who share her passion for hand quilting. She is also a member of two quilting guilds, the Daughters of Dorcas and Sons and the Quilt-ables. Nancy may also be seen hand dancing or doing Social Ballroom about town or participating in Zumba. Her time may also include tutoring students – elementary through high school, choreographing dances, or being around people and enjoying being around people.
Nancy is the proud of mother of two daughters and a grandmother to two handsome grandsons as well as to a surrogate grandson and granddaughter.
